The checks, with Whirlpool's detail
- 1Confirm the door is fully closed
Whirlpool says the door must be completely closed for the washer to operate, and that nothing such as clothing or shipping material should be blocking the door latch.
- 2Check whether the door lock is dirty
Whirlpool says wash media can build up around the lock, and to clean it with a soft, damp cloth if needed.
- 3Check the load size
Before closing the door, make sure no laundry is sticking out past the opening, and leave room for clothes to tumble freely. Whirlpool says an overloaded basket may keep the door from shutting completely; reduce the load if needed.

Where to stop
Whirlpool's page says to contact it or make an appointment with one of its preferred service providers (service.whirlpool.com, whirlpool.com/contact-us).
Not covered here, on purpose: The door lock assembly, its switch and its wiring. Whirlpool's owner page stops at cleaning the lock and the load size. Read when to stop and call a technician.
