Whirlpool F5 E3: The door is not locking properly.
Whirlpool's page says F5 E3 indicates that the door is not locking properly. Whirlpool publishes the same one-line description on its F5 E2 page: the two are separate codes with separate pages, the same stated meaning and slightly different owner checks, and this site does not invent a distinction between them that Whirlpool does not make.

Fault isolation, in Whirlpool's order
- Owner check from Whirlpool's page
- Observation Whirlpool asks you to make
- Request service: technician only beyond here
- Code should clear
The checks, with Whirlpool's detail
- 1Close the door completely
Whirlpool also says to check that nothing blocks the latch or stops the door closing, such as clothing or shipping materials.
- 2Reset the control
The control has to be disconnected from power for 5 minutes. If the washer is plugged into an outlet, unplug it for 5 minutes and plug it back in.
- Does F5 E3 still appear?
Where to stop
Whirlpool's page says to contact it or make an appointment with one of its preferred service providers (service.whirlpool.com, whirlpool.com/contact-us).
Not covered here, on purpose: The door lock assembly, its wiring and the control board. Not on Whirlpool's owner page; not on this site. Read when to stop and call a technician.
Same code, different meaning on other brands
None of the other brands in the verified set (Bosch, LG, Samsung, ) uses F5 E3 or F5E3 on the official pages read for this site. If your display shows F5 E3 on a different brand, do not apply these checks; use the lookup or that brand's own support page.
