The checks, with Whirlpool's detail
- 1Check the drain hose installation
Whirlpool says the hose must not extend more than 4.5 inches (113 mm) into the standpipe or laundry tub, or drained water can siphon back. Use the U-shaped hose form from the installation instructions. Maximum hose height is 96 inches from the bottom of the washer.
- 2Make sure the standpipe is not sealed
Do not tape the hose into the drainpipe. It should be loose but secure, with an air gap that breaks the siphon.
- 3Clean the drain pump filter (some models)
On some models the filter is behind the bottom dispenser drawer. A clogged filter stops the washer draining well. Whirlpool links a cleaning guide and videos for models with and without a storage drawer.
- 4Clean the door seal (bellow)
Small drain holes inside the door seal can clog. Whirlpool refers owners to the Cleaning and Maintenance section of the manual.

Where to stop
Whirlpool's page offers Schedule Service Online (service.whirlpool.com), its Contact Us page and the customer service line 1-866-698-2538 for US owners.
Not covered here, on purpose: The drain pump, its wiring and the pressure switch. Whirlpool's owner page stops at the cleanable filter and door seal. Read when to stop and call a technician.
Same code, different meaning on other brands
